How to Fix a Squeaky Floor

Squeaky floors are one of the most common and irritating household problems in UK homes, particularly in older properties with solid timber floorboards. The squeak is caused by floorboards rubbing against each other or against the joists underneath.

Why Floors Squeak

Floors squeak when timber moves and rubs against a neighbouring surface. Common causes include: floorboard nails working loose over time, boards shrinking as they dry and rubbing against each other, or floorboards rubbing against pipes underneath.

Method 1 — Talcum Powder or Graphite

For minor squeaks, sprinkle talcum powder or powdered graphite along the joints between boards. Work it into the cracks with a brush. The lubricating effect reduces friction and eliminates the squeak. This is a temporary fix but costs almost nothing.

Method 2 — Screwing Down Loose Boards

If a board is visibly moving when you walk on it, it needs securing. Use 50mm wood screws to fix it back to the joist below. Locate the joist by tapping along the floor until you hear a solid sound. Pre-drill to avoid splitting the board.

Method 3 — Adding Wood Adhesive

For floorboards that squeak due to movement against each other, inject wood adhesive (PVA) into the joint between squeaking boards. Weight down the boards while the adhesive sets overnight.

Method 4 — Access From Below

If you have access from below, squeaks caused by boards rubbing on joists can be fixed by adding wooden shims between the joist and the subfloor where movement is occurring.

Carpeted Floors

For squeaky floors under carpet, you can use a specialist Squeeeeek No More kit which drives screws through carpet into the joist without leaving a visible mark. Alternatively, lift the carpet edge and screw the board down directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Wood expands and contracts with humidity and temperature. In winter, central heating dries the air and causes timber to contract, creating gaps that produce squeaks. The same floor may be quiet in summer when humidity is higher.
Most squeaky floors are simply a maintenance issue. However, if accompanied by bouncy or springy floors, visible floor movement, or damp smells, it may indicate joist damage or rot which needs professional investigation.
Screwing down floorboards properly does not damage them. Use the correct length screw and pre-drill to prevent splitting. If boards are particularly old or fragile, consult a carpenter before proceeding.
A carpenter typically charges £150-300 to identify and fix squeaky floorboards in a room. The cost depends on the number of squeaks and accessibility.
Yes — talcum powder, graphite, or wood adhesive injected into joints can fix many squeaks without lifting boards. Screwing down from above works too, provided you locate the joists correctly.
