Best Time to Lay Turf in the UK
Turf can be laid almost any time in the UK except during extreme frost or drought. The best times are: spring (March–May) when temperatures are mild and rainfall helps establishment, and autumn (September–October) when the ground is warm but evaporation is low.
Calculating How Much Turf You Need
Measure the area accurately and add 5% for cutting waste. Turf is sold by the square metre and typically costs £3–£6 per square metre. Order from a local turf supplier rather than a DIY store for fresher, better quality turf.
Step 1 — Prepare the Soil
This is the most important step. Remove all weeds, old grass, and debris. Dig or rotovate to 150mm depth. Remove large stones. Add a 50mm layer of good quality topsoil if existing soil is poor or compacted. Rake to a fine, level tilth. Firm gently with the back of a rake.
Step 2 — Apply Pre-Turf Fertiliser
Rake a pre-turf fertiliser into the top 25mm of soil the day before laying. This feeds the new grass through its critical establishment period and gives significantly better results than skipping this step.
Step 3 — Lay the First Row
Start from a straight edge (path, fence, or string line). Butt rolls tightly together without overlapping. Stagger joints like brickwork — never align vertical joints in adjacent rows. Work from boards laid on the turf to avoid compacting the soil.
Step 4 — Aftercare
Water thoroughly immediately after laying — turf needs 25mm of water to establish. Water daily for the first 2 weeks in dry weather. Avoid walking on new turf for 2 weeks. First cut: when turf reaches 5–6cm, cut to 3–4cm height.
