How to Build a Media Wall

The media wall — a floor-to-ceiling wall unit built around a TV and often incorporating a fireplace — has become one of the most searched interior DIY topics in the UK. This guide shows you exactly how to build one yourself.

What Is a Media Wall?

A media wall is a purpose-built wall feature that frames the TV, typically incorporating an electric or ethanol fireplace, floating shelves, LED lighting, and integrated speakers. They range from simple plasterboard constructions to elaborate joinery projects.

Design Considerations

Plan the wall carefully: TV size and mounting position, fireplace opening dimensions, shelf positions and depths, cable management routes, power socket positions. Sketch it to scale on paper first. Popular finishes include herringbone timber, fluted panels, painted MDF, and stone effect tiles.

Materials Needed

Timber studwork (47x100mm), plasterboard (12.5mm and 15mm for fireplace surround), grab adhesive, MDF sheets and mouldings, electric fireplace insert, TV wall bracket, LED strip lights, cabling and back boxes, plaster and jointing compound, primer and paint.

Step 1 — Build the Stud Frame

Mark out the wall position and fix a sole plate to the floor and head plate to the ceiling. Fit vertical studs at 400mm centres. Ensure the frame is plumb and straight. Build out any alcoves or recessed sections as part of the frame.

Step 2 — First Fix Electrics

Before boarding, run cables for: TV aerial and HDMI behind the wall, power sockets at TV height and shelf positions, fireplace power supply, LED strip lighting. Use conduit to protect cables and allow future changes. Use a qualified electrician for this stage.

Step 3 — Board and Finish

Fix plasterboard to the stud frame, staggering joints. Use 15mm board around the fireplace opening for fire resistance. Tape and joint all seams with jointing compound. Skim or plaster for a smooth finish. Prime and paint, or apply chosen panel finish.

Step 4 — Fit TV, Fireplace, and Lighting

Fit the TV wall bracket ensuring it hits studs or use appropriate fixings. Install the electric fireplace insert. Fit LED strip lights in recesses. Dress with shelves, accessories, and plants.
