Why Wall Panelling Is Trending
Wall panelling searches have surged dramatically since 2023, driven by Pinterest, Instagram, and TikTok interior content. It offers a high-end look at a fraction of the cost of other renovations. A panelled living room wall can be achieved for £100–£400 in materials and a weekend of work.
Types of Wall Panelling
Shaker panelling: classic grid of rectangular panels — the most popular style. Board and batten: vertical boards with thin battens covering the joins. Fluted panelling: vertical grooved panels — very current and dramatic. Wainscoting: panelling on the lower portion of a wall only. Picture frame panelling: decorative framing effect.
Materials and Costs
MDF is the most popular material for wall panelling — easy to cut, paints beautifully, and affordable at £15–£25 per sheet. Pre-primed MDF mouldings save time. Ready-made panel kits from MR Mouldings, Rawlins, and others cost £50–£150 per wall section and include everything needed.
What You Will Need
MDF sheets or pre-cut panels, MDF mouldings (for shaker style), a mitre saw or good hand saw, grab adhesive (No More Nails), a nail gun or panel pins, a spirit level, caulk and caulking gun, wood filler, fine sandpaper (180 grit), primer, and paint.
Step 1 — Plan and Measure
Decide on panel layout and mark out on the wall. For shaker panelling, panels are typically 400–600mm wide. Ensure the outermost panels are equal width on both sides of the wall. Mark all horizontal and vertical lines with a level.
Step 2 — Cut and Fix Panels
Cut MDF to size using a mitre saw for clean edges. Apply grab adhesive to the back of each piece and press firmly into position. Use a pin nailer or finishing nails to secure while adhesive sets. Butt all joints tightly together.
Step 3 — Fill, Sand, and Paint
Fill all nail holes and joints with fine surface filler. Allow to dry, then sand smooth with 180-grit. Apply flexible decorator caulk along all edges where panels meet the wall. Prime all MDF surfaces — MDF absorbs paint heavily without primer. Apply 2 coats of eggshell or satinwood for a durable, wipeable finish.
