Call-Out Fees
Many plumbers charge a call-out fee on top of their hourly rate. This covers travel and the first visit. Expect to pay £50–£100 for a standard call-out. Emergency call-outs, especially evenings and weekends, can cost £100–£200 just to arrive.

How to Get the Best Price
Always get at least 3 quotes for larger jobs. Ask for a fixed price where possible rather than an hourly rate. Check the plumber is registered with the Gas Safe Register (for gas work) or a member of the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE). Avoid anyone who insists on cash only or won't provide a written quote.
Is VAT Included in Plumber Quotes?
VAT-registered plumbers must charge 20% VAT on top of their prices. Always clarify whether a quote includes or excludes VAT. Many sole trader plumbers are not VAT registered, which can make them cheaper.
